Hi! My name is Pinta Kearns and I am a third year Visual Communication student at QUT.
My design identity, Indie Illustrations (II), is an ongoing identity I have been developing since 2018.
Indie Illustrations is a design identity that values itself on honest and ethical design, utilising their skills in graphic design to create effective and persuasive graphic elements. Indie Illustrations looks past big corporations who only seek quarterly profit and instead aims to design for the disadvantaged - the people who do not have the same skills in communication as them - giving them a valid voice in the clutter of modern media. The flower and butterfly are two very important symbols for II, hence the flower incorporation into the II logo. The Butterfly represents Pinta - the designer, and the flower represents the garden of design. Pinta as the butterfly flies freely to many different bright and beautiful flowers (design styles), appreciating them and being influenced by them each individually for their own characteristics. The butterfly is influenced by artists such as Wes Wilson and Marimekko for their bright blocks of colour and simple smooth shapes. Jean Michel Basquiat and CB Hoyo are influencers for their chaotic portrayals of life in a way that challenges societies norms. The butterfly is also particularly inspired by the poet Oscar Wilde and his belief that the artist's job is just ‘to create beautiful things’ and that that is their highest responsibility. From a modern day perspective, Indie Illustrations combines these perspectives and inspirations to make a commitment to design.
“My commitment to design is to devote my skills to those who need a voice in the world, conveying their message persuasively, creatively in a fun and bright way”
